Good post. I went through the post and found it to be an interesting one. Methinks, this diet is unhealthy and you should not be consuming it. Thanks for a good discussion.

Hey Tony, great topic for discussion. I just wrote a blog post on this same subject yesterday. I think we definitely need to talk about this as people can certainly get the wrong impression about the diet. I focused on the fact that while the professor who did this study may have a fast metabolism and excellent insulin sensitivity, most people who are overweight do not. If a person had low insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance and followed this diet it could lead to full scale type II diabetes. The quality of calories certainly does make a difference and you can't ignore the impact sugar has on the body's hormonal balances. Keep up the good work...Shane

I guess my question is this: I feel as if men & womens metabolism levels burn differently, would this Twinkie diet study be just as effective on a women as it was this man? I by NO means think this was a smart idea(as he says the smae thing)... and I'm STILL confused how his cholesterol levels improved by eating Twinkies??? See this VERY intersting fact on Twinkies below. The next time you think you wanna eat a Twinkie..think again after reading this:

Those products (Twinkies, Nutty Bars, Ho-Ho's) are food-like substances processed in plants, not made by plants. Their shelf life is quite long due to the level of preservatives. Just for grins, here’s what’s in a Twinkie: The Twinkie, which was created during the Depression, contains thirty-nine ingredients. One 43g Twinkie contains 2% of the recommended daily amount (RDA) of iron but none of the RDA for vitamins A and C and calcium. Each cake has 5g of fat (2g of which are saturated), 20mg of cholesterol, 200mg of salt, 25g of carbohydrates (of which 14g is sugar), 1g of protein and no fiber. Five ingredients come from rocks. I’m not kidding. These include: phosphate mines in Idaho, gypsum mines in Oklahoma, and oil fields in China. Sorbic acid, for example, is actually derived from natural gas. Cellulose gum, Polysorbate 60, and calcium sulfate are also used in sheet rock, shampoo, and rocket fuel. The vitamins, artificial colors, and flavorings in Twinkies come from petroleum. Limestone makes Twinkies light and the cream looking center is made of shortening. There is no cream. (Ummmm VOMIT!!!!)See More

Obviously by creating the required caloric deficit the professor was bound to lose weight. I dug a little deeper to find out exactly how much of that 27 pounds was fat and how much was muscle. On the professor's facebook page he shares that he lost 6 pounds of muscle...not good! Just think if he hadn't consumed a protein shake daily and continued to exercise. It would have been significantly more lost muscle. Losing actively metabolic tissue makes it near impossible to maintain that weight loss. That right there is indication enough that this diet is unhealthy and you should be consuming high nutrient value foods as part of a well rounded fitness and weight loss program. I go into more detail on an article I wrote on the subject and would love to get your comments Tony. http://bestjacksonpersonaltrainer.com/snack-cake-diet/.

Best,
